A note for my single friends
1. Matthew22:29-30 ESV
But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
God, through Jesus, tells us that marriage is a temporary state. I’m not discounting marriage in any way, but it can seem at times like an ultimate goal, but it isn’t. It’s a gift from God, when it is right in His timing. I know how unfair it seems at times waiting on God for what we think we ought to have. However, not all gifts are equal, if we keep asking for that pen-and-pencil set, maybe we will get it, but we might never know that God was going to get us a ’67 Mustang (or Corvette, or Charger, or bike, or Lamborghini if that’s what you’re into, etc.)
2. 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 ESV
I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.
We have to remember that we are all called to different places in life, and not everything we will be called to do can be done when we are married. Not to say that you’d be single forever, but while God has led you to a time of singleness, we should use it for Him. Being single is a difficult time, especially with the pressure that society puts on young people to hurry up and build their “American dream,” peer pressure to fall in love, get married, buy a house, have kids, and so forth. However, the age of the Cleavers is gone and half of all marriages end in divorce. The whole business of marriage is an industry (millions? Billions? No wonder they want us to think we need a wedding to be happy). People enter into marriage without respect or reverence for the sacred bonds of matrimony, without thoughts oftheir promising God faithfulness.
3. 1 Corinthians 7:26-28 ESV
I think that in view of the present distress it is good for a person to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned, and if a betrothed woman marries, she has not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that.
Yall know that saying, "more money, more problems?" Well it’s true and it’s also true for being married. If God has not called you to be married, even if you were and aren’t anymore, God knows how difficult the road of marriage is. Perhaps He has something bigger planned for you. Maybe He is using you to be an example to others, to people, younger ones, nephews, cousins and young men of your church. Maybe, He is building you up to strengthen you for mission work or until the husband that He has for you is ready. I pray that your time of singleness is the time you choose to walk closely with Him.
4. Song of Solomon 3:5 ESV
I adjure you, O daughters ofJerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up orawaken love until it pleases.
This verse is repeated 3 times in the book of Song of Solomon. (2:7, 3:5, 8:4) Three times they’re asking the young women of Jerusalem to promise not to awaken love. Only God can form a bud into a bloom.
5. Song of Solomon 8:6-7
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong asdeath, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, thevery flame of the LORD. 7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floodsdrown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would beutterly despised.
*Jealousy is as fierce as the grave.
6. Isaiah 41:10 ESV
"Fear not, for I am with you; benot dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I willuphold you with my righteous right hand."
Pull Closer to our Heavenly father more than ever before, call on Him when you feel lonely. Don’t let the desire for marriage overshadow the good things that God has put into your life for right now. Pray for His will to be done in your life.
